If Our Walls Could Talk: Celebrating 90 Years of Our Sanctuary

This is a perfect time to reflect on life at RS today and its deep roots to our past. Chairing the celebrations and honoring this milestone are Susan Klehr and Fred Strober.

90 for 90 Patron Levels

In lieu of following our practice of holding fall and spring fundraisers, we are producing these celebratory events as a special “package.”  The money we raise from this initiative will enable Rodeph Shalom to supplement the annual commitments from congregants and continue to provide the kind of excellent programming our congregation expects.

Diamond Angel: $5,000.
•    Participation at both the November 3 celebration and April 28 spring event (2 tickets)
•    Reserved seating, with no additional contribution, to Dancing With Giants starring Tovah Feldshuh on November 14 (2 tickets)
•    Reserved seating, with no additional contribution, for the Scholar Speaker Series (2 tickets)
•    Attendance at the PMJA opening and Latke/Vodka party on DeceOKmber 6 (2 tickets)
•    A piece published in the If These Walls Could Talk commemorative book (400 word limit)
•    Executive Producer status in the film being created for the 90th anniversary year

Platinum Angel: $2,500.
•    Participation at both the November 3 celebration and April 28 spring event (2 tickets)
•    Reserved seating, with no additional contribution, to Dancing With Giants starring Tovah Feldshuh on November 14 (2 tickets)
•    Reserved seating, with no additional contribution, for the Scholar Speaker Series (2 tickets)

Sunday, April 28 – Premiering the film about RS: If These Walls Could Talk; Ilana Trachtman will film a short video that illustrates RS's grand historical perspective and intimate soul. The film will capture Rodeph Shalom's life at its most resplendent moments and most personal. Using original footage and interviews with families, archival images, historical memorabilia, found footage, and text on screen, viewers will understand RS’s contribution to the history of Jewish Philadelphia and progressive American Judaism, and why it will continue to be at the forefront for the next century. Wednesday, December 12 at 7:00pm - "Can We Talk About Gender and Judaism Pre-#MeToo? Rodeph Shalom Women Responding for 90 Years" with Rabbi Carole Balin, Professor Emerita of History at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion; This program is sponsored by the Behrend Lecture Fund.

Sunday, January 27 at 10:15am - "1928: Rodeph Shalom and the Architecture of Modern Philadelphia" with Michael Hauptman, RS President
 

Wednesday, February 13 at 7:00pm– "City Walls, Gates, and Highways: The Boundaries and Breaches of American Jewish Urbanism" with Dr. Lila Corwin Berman, adult education speaker, Director of the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History; This program is sponsored by the Broder family.

Tuesday, March 26 at 7pm - "If Our Shoes Could Talk & Where They Have Taken Us" with Stuart and Jane Weitzman Share Stories about their Family, Shoe Business, and How They Are Making a Difference in Today's World
Cost: $18/members, $25/non-members, $90/patron for this event
Ivy Barsky, CEO and Gwen Goodman Director of the National Museum of American Jewish History, will interview this accomplished couple; Stuart, a successful shoe designer, an entrepreneur and founder of the globally renowned shoe company bearing his name, and Jane, a major leader in the organized Jewish community in the US and abroad. Together they will share their passions and ways they are making a profound impact on life in the US and abroad. Register here.

Learn about the history of the buildin on Friday nights in November:

In commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the RS sanctuary, our PMJA (Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art) docents will offer 45-minute tours of various parts of the 1928 building. Congregants are guaranteed to learn surprising history, architectural lessons, and fun facts. Tours will be given on Fridays, November 2, 9, 23, and 30 at 5pm and 7:15pm from the main entrance lobby on Green Street. Contact Alicia Broudy for more information. RSVP here.
