SUMMARY:Israel Palestine Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:“What Was the Gaza War and What is the Kushner Peace Plan?”\nTuesday\, December 9 at 6:30 p.m.\n\nThere are many ways to look at the war Israel waged against Hamas in the aftermath of the October 7 atrocities. Professor Ian Lustick\, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, returns to RS to help us think them through. Can we learn more by seeing the attack on October 7? Was it a prison revolt followed by a brutal aftermath? Was it a war for Israel’s existence\, or a secessionist conflict? Perhaps it was even the prelude\, in its barbarity\, to a new Middle East. RS members and their invited guests are welcome. RSVP to Heshie Zinman.\n\nDr. Lustick holds the Bess W. Heyman Chair\, Emeritus\, in the Political Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a past president of the Politics and History section of the American Political Science Association and of the Association for Israel Studies\, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Among his books are Arabs in the Jewish State (1980); For the Land of the Lord (1988\, 1994); Unsettled States\, Disputed Lands (1993); Trapped in the War on Terror (2006); and Paradigm Lost (2019).

SUMMARY:Israel-Palestine Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Religiously orthodox\, politically radical\, CUNY journalism professor and commentator Peter Beinart has written a short book that tells a bracing story. Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning describes Beinart’s journey from a mild critic of Israel for its failure to live up to the ideals of liberal Zionism to a man who is unsure whether anyone will shake his hand when he enters his synagogue on Shabbat. \nIn a discussion led by Howard Green\, a member of our steering committee\, we will talk about Beinart’s warning that the Jewish state has taken an unnecessarily brutal and self-destructive turn\, among other issues. We will also show an excerpt from Beinart’s late July appearance on The Daily Show. \nRS members & their invited guests are welcome to join for the discussion. RSVP to Heshie Zinman.

Among other places\, their itinerary included the site of the Nova music festival\, the city of Hebron\, and Al Twani\, one of the villages of Masafer Yatta. This is the Palestinian region whose repeated targeting for demolition by the IDF was featured in the Academy Award winning (Best Documentary Feature) film “No Other Land.” Catherine and Rabbi Sue will join us to share the lessons of their trip. \nOur events are open to RS members and their invited guests. SUMMARY:“Is the Two-State Solution an Achievable Goal in Israel and Palestine Today?” with Professor Ian Lustick
DESCRIPTION:While most independent experts on Israel and Palestine believe that a two-state solution to the Israel/Palestine problem is an unattainable aim\, many American politicians\, American Jews\, and even some Palestinian and Israel leaders still see it as the best hope. Why? \nJoin us as we plunge into this thicket with Professor Ian Lustick\, a distinguished analyst of Middle-Eastern affairs. Has hoping for a two-state solution become a way to avoid facing the problems that the current one-state reality poses? What can we learn from the stories of places in the world that have managed to include traditionally excluded segments of their populations? Can American & Jewish values be sources of new insight and hope in the current moment? \nRegister here. Join Zoom here. Questions? Contact Heshie Zinman at hjzinman@gmail.com.
