SUMMARY:ReadRS: This is Not About Us by Allegra Goodman
DESCRIPTION:A dispute about an apple cake recipe kicks off this multi-generational portrait of a complicated American Jewish family. (What other kind is there?) NPR critic Maureen Corrigan says it is so good you may want to re-read it immediately. The New York Times reviewer calls it “nimble\, heartfelt\, acutely written…and deliciously readable.” So why not read it and come talk about it? Maybe there’ll be cake. \nRegister here. Contact Howard Green.

SUMMARY:ReadRS: Sons & Daughters Part Three
DESCRIPTION:Perseverance is a Jewish value. “Seven times the righteous man falls and gets up” a Proverb proclaims. And three times will the steadfast members of ReadRS come together to discuss Sons and Daughters. Keep reading and join us to talk about the last half of Chaim Grade’s engrossing novel about the interlocked lives of the many children of a pair of Rabbis in 1930s Poland. It’s a fascinating portrait of the pressures on pre-war Yiddish Civilization from movements such as Zionism\, secularism\, and Reform. \nRegister here. \nContact Howard Green at greenhl@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:ReadRS: Sons & Daughters Part Two
DESCRIPTION:The last book by the last great Yiddish writer of the 20th century. It was published serially in Yiddish newspapers in New York in the 1960s. The manuscript was thought lost until it was recently discovered among Grade’s widow’s papers by YIVO (The Institute for Jewish Research)\, which saw to its translation and publication. Called both “melancholy” and “hilarious” by the New York Times\, it provides a moving depiction of the world that the Holocaust eviscerated. The book was written in pieces and there is no reason it can’t be read that way too. \nJoin us\, whether you came to part 1 or not\, for what will surely be an energetic conversation. \nRegister here. \nContact Howard Green at greenhl@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:ReadRS: Sons and Daughters by Chaim Grade
DESCRIPTION:Sons and Daughters by Chaim Grade\nPart One Discussion: Tuesday\, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. at RS \nSons and Daughters by Chaim Grade is the last book by the last great Yiddish writer of the 20th century. It was published serially in Yiddish newspapers in New York in the 1960s. The manuscript was thought lost until a few years ago when it was discovered among Grade’s widow’s papers by YIVO (The Institute for Jewish Research)\, which saw to its translation and publication. Called both “melancholy” and “hilarious” by the New York Times\, it is a sprawling and eventful story. Sprawling can be another word for long\, and we’re going to read and discuss Sons and Daughters in pieces at roughly 6 week intervals starting October 28 when we’ll talk about part one. \nRegister here. Contact Howard Green.

SUMMARY:ReadRS: Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akin
DESCRIPTION:Called “the Great American Reform Jewish Novel” by one critic\, Long Island Compromise tells the story of three generations of a prosperous family in the aftermath of a traumatic kidnapping. “A dybbuk is in the works” members of the Fletcher family are wont to remark when things go awry. As another critic observed\, the dybbuk really hits the fan in this witty\, unsettling gem of a novel. Read it to find out why it was chosen for more than a dozen best novels of 2024 lists. Then come talk about it with us. \nRegister here.  Contact Howard Green at greenhl@gmail.com. \nFor more from Brodesser-Akner\, take a look at her recent article in the NY TImes Magazine about a Holocaust survivor.

SUMMARY:ReadRS: The Passenger by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz.
DESCRIPTION:This is the fictional account of Otto Silberman\, a prosperous Jewish businessman who takes flight when brown-shirted thugs pound on the door of his Berlin apartment as the “night of broken glass” – Kristallnacht – is unfolding. Written in the immediate aftermath of the November 1938 pogrom by a 23 year old\, it was published to little notice in 1939. (There was kind of a lot going on that year.) Long thought lost\, the manuscript was found in a Frankfurt archive and translated a few years ago. You’ve never read anything like it. Either you won’t be able to put it down\, or you’ll have to because the tension is too great. It’s vivid and immediate\, as if Franz Kafka had rewritten the screenplay to The Fugitive. An eerily prescient portrait of the darkness that was descending on European Jewry. \nRegister here. Contact Howard Green at greenhl@gmail.com.
