Bamidbar (8th-10th Grades)

*The five books of the Torah are B’reishit (Genesis), Sh’mot (Exodus), Vayikra (Leviticus), Bamidbar (Numbers), and D’varim (Deuteronomy). Torah is fundamental to Jewish life and learning, so our school is built around Torah! Students within a Community of Torah share t’filah (prayer/worship) experiences and other aspects of life at Berkman Mercaz Limud and enjoy youth group events together, and their teachers collaborate on shared goals appropriate to the developmental stages of the children in their community.

All students in Bamidbar (8th through 10th Grades) enjoy these experiences on Sunday mornings:

  • Panim el Panim (Face to Face) – A chance for students to continue building their friendships, catch up on the week, and have conversations on a wide range of topics.
  • Torah Discussions with Rabbi Maderer – A deep dive into the weekly Torah portion, with particular emphasis on what the Torah can teach us about how to live our lives today.
  • Learning for Teens with teachers, and special appearances from the clergy and Jennifer James. This year, the teens will have three semesters, with a different custom-written curriculum each semester: What Does Jewish Look Like; What About God; and Interfaith Community Engagement.
  • Weekly Electives – multiple choices for each trimester, including Designing No Place for Hate activities; History of Prayer with Rabbi Freedman; Jewish music with Cantor Hyman; Leadership training; and more.

Plus…

  • Bagels with schmear and lots of other treats every Sunday morning in…a fantastic space created just for teens, with games lounging and everything they need to learn together.
  • Sunday morning trips throughout the year, including social justice opportunities and a hike in the Wissahickon
  • A December trip to Israel with Jennifer James.
  • Youth group events with Jem Oshins, our Youth Engagement Coordinator, and chances to participate in NFTY-PAR, our regional Reform Jewish youth group.
  • Holiday celebrations for Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Hanukkah, Purim, Pesach, Yom Ha’atzmaut, and Lag B’Omer!
  • Family Shabbat dinners once a month. We love it when teens and their families come to Shabbat!
