Hunger and Thirst in the Jewish World: Poverty, Food Insecurity and the Search for Community Speaker: DOV BEN-SHIMON, Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships for JDC
(American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee)
From today’s crisis in Ukraine to the typhoon-stricken Philippines, there is one Jewish organization that for 100 years has been dedicated to caring for Jews and others around the globe facing hunger, poverty, economic and political strife, and disaster…and that is JDC. JDC is the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian organization. JDC works in more than 70 countries to alleviate hunger and hardship, rescue Jews in danger, create lasting connections to Jewish life, and provide support for victims of natural and man-made disasters, both Jews and non-Jews alike. Hear from Dov Ben-Shimon, who was born in England and moved to Israel at age 18, where he was an Air Force Rescue Medic and Infantry Combat Medic in the IDF. Prior to joining JDC, he served as Assistant Spokesman to Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, as Deputy Ambassador at the Israeli Embassy in Angola, and as Director of Resources for the Israeli Reform Movement in Jerusalem. Dov brings a unique perspective on Jewish needs and Jewish communities from Argentina to Uzbekistan. We at RS are proud to host Dov and his armchair tour of Jews around the world. Dov will address the current status of the Jews of Ukraine as well as the ten decades of rescue, relief, and rebuilding of worldwide Jewish communities that have been JDC’s hallmark. Special thank you to Betsy & Richard Sheerr for bringing this program to Rodeph Shalom.
