Sons and Daughters by Chaim Grade
Part One Discussion: Tuesday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. at RS
Sons and Daughters by Chaim Grade is the last book by the last great Yiddish writer of the 20th century. It was published serially in Yiddish newspapers in New York in the 1960s. The manuscript was thought lost until a few years ago when it was discovered among Grade’s widow’s papers by YIVO (The Institute for Jewish Research), which saw to its translation and publication. Called both “melancholy” and “hilarious” by the New York Times, it is a sprawling and eventful story. Sprawling can be another word for long, and we’re going to read and discuss Sons and Daughters in pieces at roughly 6 week intervals starting October 28 when we’ll talk about part one.
