Do Not Stand Idly By: A Different Focus for Gun Reform

In an intimate scene in parashat Ki Tisa, God says to Moses: “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and the grace that I grant and the compassion that I show; but you cannot see my face… See there is a place near Me.  Station yourself on the rock.  And as my Presence passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with My hand, until I have passed by.  Then I will take my hand away and you will see my back; but My face will not be seen.” When we witness divinity, we see God’s back, but not God’s face. We do not see everything.  Only part of the picture.

Last shabbat, I shared with you my heartbreak over the tragic news of the mass school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida; and I also shared with you the inspiration in the teen-agers activism since.  I continue to think of them as I hear from my rabbinic colleagues in Florida, who have been burying the Jewish teens, who are among the slaughtered.

With those students ever still in my heart, I think this Shabbat’s Torah portion points to another angle, in the complex issues around gun violence in our nation.  From the cleft of the rock, what am I not seeing?  What do I need to acknowledge is there, even if it is not in full view?

A day or 2 after the tragic news of the school shooting, I watched the feature on the morning news. Devastating stories of 17 deaths, teen-agers hiding in closets, teachers heroically shielding their students, and bereavement counseling taking place as the survivors went to therapy, instead of to class.

And then, after this feature, the local news moved on to the next story.  It briefly told the story of two shootings in our city, in poor neighborhoods, not far from my home, or from our congregation.  I don’t think they devoted even a minute to each of the local shootings.  And then they helped me, the viewer, turn away, and barely see the gun violence in our city.  Barely even acknowledge the everyday, from my limited perspective.

Teen Vogue clearly makes the point in an article called “Black Teens Have Been Fighting For Gun Reform for Years.”  Their voices have not attracted the same media and popular attention.  So, in understanding who is hurt by gun violence, let’s focus our attention with a different perspective.

Let’s take another look, now, to understand: mass shootings are the minority of gun deaths. On an average day, 96 Americans are killed with guns.  Who are they? 50 are women, shot to death each month by intimate partners.  Black men are 13 times more likely than white men to be killed by a gun.  62% of firearm deaths in the US are suicides.

So usually, based on the story that isn’t told– the gun picture we don’t see– the people who may feel less cared for in our society, are African Americans, victims of domestic violence, victims of suicide.

Something of our position in the cleft of the rock may continue to conceal– we might not be able to see the whole picture– but we can start to acknowledge that there is something else to see.  Surely our embrace is large enough for all kinds of gun violence victims.

And in our heartbreak over the firearms, a fire is growing in our nation and in our community– a fire that burns for social justice.  Our tradition teaches “Lo alecha hamlicha ligmor, v’lo ata ben chorim l’hibatel mimema: You are not expected to complete the task; but you cannot give up on it either.”  Yet, advocacy for public policy can be discouraging.  So, in understanding how we act for gun reform, let’s focus our attention with a different perspective, on an additional possible action to take.

A rabbinic colleague of mine, Rabbi Joel Mosbacher, who is at the forefront of gun reform leadership, has partnered with multi-faith clergy and organizers to form a campaign called Do Not Stand Idly By.  Rabbi Mosbacher has become as expert in this work ever since tragically, his own father was killed by gunshot wound as his place of work.  Named for the Torah passage, “Do not stand idly by while your neighbor bleeds,” this campaign focuses not on legislative action, but on purchasing power as a path to gun safety.  The economic-focused strategy, relies on a research-based understanding of the gun market and crime.

Here is the interesting number at the foundation of their work: 60% of the guns turning up at crime scenes, are traced to 1% of gun stores. Through their business relationships, gun manufacturers could help control the worst of the gun dealers.  Why would they?  Here’s the other key statistic: 40% of the business that gun manufacturers do– is with our cities’ police forces and the military.  Our tax dollars are 40% of gun manufacturers’ business.  The Do Not Stand Idly By campaign says:  let’s leverage that power.

The campaign seeks to engage mayors and police chiefs, to agree to send to their gun vendors a Request for Information, so manufacturers can demonstrate how they set standards with their dealers, and in the worse cases, sever ties with crime gun stores.

123 cities across the nation have signed on, to engage their gun manufacturers in leveraging against crime gun stores.  In Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and Easton have signed on. If you would like to help us join with other faiths and bring the Do Not Stand Idly By campaign to Philadelphia, please email me.

I believe it is time to think differently, to add to the ways we can have an impact for gun reform… To hold many kinds of victims of gun violence in our compassionate embrace, and to have different kinds of advocacy in our work.  Something of our position in the cleft in the rock may continue to conceal– we might not be able to see the whole picture– but we can start to acknowledge that there is something else to see.  Perhaps, even something else to do.

Even though we cannot see the divine face, God says: “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and the grace that I grant and the compassion that I show.”

As we look more closely, may we witness God’s grace and God’s compassion.  And may it inspire grace and compassion in us all.

Bring Your Lamp

Yom Kippur Address delivered by RS President Michael Hauptman on September 30, 2017.

Language has always been an interest of mine; how language evolves, where words come from and how language provides a window into a society or culture.  So, a book I read recently, Aphrodite and the Rabbis by Burton Visotzky, really satisfied my tendency to be a bit of a word nerd. The author documents how after the destruction of the Second Temple, Judaism reinvented itself as a religion based heavily on Greco-Roman civilization, adopting their stories, ritual and language to create a Jewish liturgy and culture that we still practice today.  In fact, Jews at that time were more likely to speak Greek than Hebrew.

In one of his more fascinating examples, Visotzky describes how the Passover Seder as we all know it, borrows liberally from the Greek symposia, cocktail parties where the Greek literati got together to tell stories and socialize.  A symposium, a Greek word meaning “to drink together” involved many glasses of wine and many of the familiar foods that you find on your Seder plate. Diners reclined on pillows and afterwards, there would be entertainment: api komias—Greek for to the comedians! – perhaps not much to do with hiding matzoh from children.

Greek and Roman references continue to permeate our modern culture through our art, music, architecture and language.  Take the word “philanthropy”, Greek for “love of people”. An interpretation of that sentiment is reflected in our Torah, Parsha Terumah , where God tells Moses to “accept gifts…from every person whose heart so moves him”,  confirming that giving is an emotional act that invokes a depth of feeling as an incentive to give.

It is said that philanthropy provides an opportunity for a donor to fulfill their dreams and to live more Jewishly by giving to a cause they love.

There are congregants sitting among us today whose love of this community along with their passion for young children inspired them to fulfill their dream of creating a Jewish early learning center at Rodeph Shalom.  There are congregants here today whose love of this congregation and their interest in ensuring a Jewish education for our children compelled them to provide generous support for our religious school.  And there are congregational families here whose love of music and of the people of this synagogue has moved them to give us all a gift of music at Shabbat services every week.

There’s a story I’d like to share that was told by Rabbi Alan Rabishaw of Temple Or Rishon in California.

A wealthy nobleman, who lived in a small Jewish village, was getting on in years, and he wanted to create a lasting legacy for the people whom he loved so dearly. He decided that he would construct the most perfect synagogue as his special gift to the community. He hired the best architect in town who produced a magnificent design. The nobleman shared with everyone his dream that this place would reflect the very best that he had to give.  Finally, the new synagogue was completed. The doors were opened and the people flooded in. After looking around at the darkened new building, someone asked, “But, where are the lamps? Where will the light come from?”

The nobleman pointed to rows of elegant iron hooks that lined each wall of the synagogue.

Then he gave each family a lamp with a ring at its top. “You must bring these lamps when you come to the synagogue,” he told them. “Whenever you are not here, your part of the synagogue will be dark, but when you come, when you participate, and when you contribute, your contribution will illuminate our building.”

If you look closely, you will find hooks all over our building.  Is your connection to Reform Judaism through social justice?  We have hooks for that. How about food equality?  There’s a hook for that, too.  Is your passion Jewish art, historic preservation, caring community, lifelong learning?  We have hooks for every member of our congregation.

Bring your lamp.  Find your hook.  Light up this building with your presence, your participation, your passion and your philanthropy – your “love of people” of this congregation. Make Rodeph Shalom your philanthropic priority, and the light from our building will be a brilliant beacon for this city and the entire Jewish community.

As we read in Siddur Sim Shalom, “May the One who blessed our ancestors bless those who unite to establish synagogues for prayer, and those who enter them to pray, and those who give funds for heat and light, and wine for Kiddush, bread for the travelers, charity for the poor and all who devote themselves to the needs of the community and to all of Israel.”  Amen.

Breaking Bread on Broad: Helping Our Community by Jeremy Schmidt, congregant

One woman and her reticent seven year old child came in because she saw the chalk and balloons from the street. We invited her in, and gave her daughter a meal, and after she devoured a bagel, we gave her more. The way they ate said they hadn’t eaten in a while. When I told her she could have more, her eyes brightened. Then, we sat and played Penny Pack with the deck of cards, and then the teen leaders taught her Rummy, which I had taught them. She asked her young daughter to decide whether she wants to stay for a bit. After some food in her belly, the daughter was more social and said, “I’ve made my decision.” Then she pulled up a chair next to me. We sat and played the card game that her mother had been playing with the interns. I invited both of them into the library, and had her take books to read for herself, or for her child. She said under her breath, “thank God, this program exists, something positive like this exists, because I would have gone somewhere else I shouldn’t have gone today.
But I’m here.” I welcomed her back and said the doors are always open.

A Latino family came in clutching a flyer that I had passed out at Spring Garden Elementary, and the hands of two kids. The parents didn’t speak any English. We had the interns effortlessly include the kids and involve them in their games. I speak Spanish, so I managed to learn from the parents that they were just on their way to receive social security benefits and figured they’d stop in for the kids’ breakfast before a long day. Eric, the chairperson of Breaking Bread on Broad, put on Bachata music, and the parents’ faces morphed from a glazed-over look to two happy smiles.

How to Move the Right Heart at the Right Time

Davar Acher By Cantor Erin R. Frankel (as posted on ReformJudaism)

When, in Exodus 25:1-2, Torah tells us “The Eternal One spoke to Moses, saying: Tell the Israelite people to bring Me gifts; you shall accept gifts for Me from every person whose heart is so moved,” the text manages to be both inclusively open and exclusively specific. We tend today to read this invitation as an equalizer; no matter the gift, God will accept it. The most important quality of the gift is the zeal of the giver to share it. But building the Mishkan required specific materials: gold, silver, copper, fine linen, dolphin skins, for example. Any gift not found on this list would not be of much use. Did every Israelite possess something on this list?

Not all gifts are equal in value. Not all materials are central to a project. In making a request of the community, sometimes we are not specific enough about our needs, for fear of offending those who may not feel included. But in valuing willing energy over specific skill, we lose the opportunity to empower those who could rise to lead.

In this opening instruction of the parashah, Torah also clearly struggles with how to word such a request. How does a developing community welcome and include all while also elevating some over others? Did the community really want all gifts or only the ones most relevant to the task?

Perhaps the text hoped to move the heart of the individual who would hear and understand that she had a valuable contribution to make, in material or skill. When the details of a project speak to your particular strengths, you are required to step up and participate. We must be willing, when the call comes, to evaluate ourselves and know when it is our time to lead. Do not fear the display of confidence or bounty. The success of the community relies upon your heart being moved at the right time.

Cantor Erin R. Frankel serves Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia.
