Breaking Bread on Broad

Breaking Bread on Broad began in 2017 as a summer program to provide neighborhood children with free breakfast and lunch, along with a program of fun and learning, within the walls of Rodeph Shalom.  The advent of the pandemic required us to redesign our program to serve the ongoing needs of our neighbors suffering from food insecurity and lack of basic supplies for daily living.  Breaking Bread on Broad (BBoB) now provides food, diapers, and feminine hygiene supplies to up to 170 families in need each Wednesday morning outside our Green Street entrance.  BBoB partners with a variety of Philadelphia non-profits and our own RS members to obtain and distribute these necessary items.  We fulfill our RS mission to create profound connections within our RS community as we join together in this sacred work of tikkun olam and within our neighborhood through our partnerships with other organizations and our relationships with the families we serve.

Our volunteers find working with BBoB a deeply moving and enriching experience.

BREAKING BREAD ON BROAD DIAPER DRIVE

Breaking Bread on Broad (BBoB) is the social justice program at RS that helps meet the needs of our severely food insecure neighbors for food, diapers, and menstrual supplies each Wednesday morning. BBoB currently provides these items to about 170 families each week.

The needs of our BBoB babies for hygiene and comfort did not end with the end of our first diaper drive. Diapers can be prohibitively expensive for families who are worried about putting food on the table. We plan to continue the diaper drive Target gift registry and hope you will continue to donate diapers and wipes from the registry, here. Or, take a look at the registry to see our current needs, and purchase diapers and wipes from any source you choose. If the method you select does not have a delivery option, you can drop the items off at the RS security desk to let us know.

Thank you so much for this act of tikkun olam, repairing the world, by helping one baby at a time. If you would like to volunteer for BBoB, please contact us at bbob@rodephshalom.org
