The 6 Sexes of the Talmud & The Blessings of Gender Today
Wednesday June 23, 2021, 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Why do we invite people to share their pronouns? What is the place of gendered programming in our synagogue? How do we ensure that our communal lifecycle celebrations acknowledge every person? These timely questions may seem extremely of-the-moment, anathema to our Jewish ancestors. And yet… Rodeph Shalom invites you to explore the Talmud’s six sex classifications for human beings–beyond the binary of “male” and “female.” Hear from a welcoming, nonjudgmental expert in Reform Judaism, queer theory, and LGBTQ+ inclusion. Learn and discuss ancient and modern texts on trans and nonbinary Jewish life. How can we use the vast and rich Jewish tradition to celebrate and blessing gender diversity. Bring your questions about how to live–and make space for others to live–Jewishly, and with pride.

Named in 2015 by the Forward as one of America’s Most Inspiring Rabbis, Rabbi Nikki DeBlosi, PhD, is a freelance writer, speaker, teacher, and spiritual counselor. Ordained as a Reform Rabbi in 2013, she combines a high-level academic background with an approachable presence. Her interests include queer and feminist theory, sexuality and relationships, pastoral care, liturgy, and expanding lifecycle ritual. A convert herself, Rabbi Nikki helps folks find community and belonging, and she is a parent to two school-aged children. Rabbi Nikki returns to Rodeph Shalom after her presentation this past Purim on drag, gender identity, and Jewish community.
